Brno is magnet for technology investments
9 Feb. 2007 | CzechInvest | Inventec, Lektronix TAM Europe and Modus Link have at least two things in common: all of these companies provide their services to top electronics producers and all of them have recently decided to expand into Brno.
In total, 25 companies decided last year to invest nearly EUR 178 million in the South Moravia region and create jobs for more than 3,000 people.
“Thanks to the dynamic development of local universities, such as Masaryk University and the Technical University, Brno is among the cities with the highest proportion of university students per capita,” explains Tomas Hruda, CEO of CzechInvest. “In particular, specialists with good language skills are the most important resource for potential investors in modern technologies. Of course, high-quality infrastructure and fully prepared industrial properties are no less significant.”
Modus Link, which provides services in the area of supply-chain management, e.g. in electronics manufacturing, planning and management of services for other brands, has its branch for Central and Eastern Europe in Brno. TAM Europe performs maintenance for top electronics producers at Brno’s CTP park. Lektronix, another British company that came to Brno in the summer, is engaged in the repair of industrial electronics such as robots, industrial control units (PLC), servomotors, invertors and operator consoles for controlling milling machines.
“Not only Brno, but the entire Czech Republic is very popular among companies providing maintenance services for top electronics producers,” adds Rene Samek, director of CzechInvest’s Investment and Applied Research Division. “In Prague the company TestLink employs roughly 50 people who are primarily involved with specialised banking devices such as ATMs. They offer modular repairs and complete refurbishment of devices for customers from practically all over Europe. From Opatovice, near Hradec Kralove, Alpha UK CZ offers maintenance services for top electronics producers. And, of course, we mustn’t forget about Solectron, which is moving into Plzen.”
In recent years, Brno has receive a range of very high-quality projects, the latest being the investment of the company Red Hat, which develops Linux-based software in Brno. Other companies operating in Brno include Honeywell, IBM, LogicaCMG, Lufthansa, GigaByte Technology and Daikin Industries.
